Emotions and feelings are the basis of the moment tango and as such are present in many songs with their many facets. The tango for the singer, the dancer, the musician, can be love, suffering, anger, jealousy, abandonment; it can be a joy to live when one is happy, melancholy when one is sad, but it is nevertheless a channel to transmit what we have inside, intimate feelings often impossible to communicate in other ways. In this the tango can really help us acting as “therapy” for the couple, but also for our self.
Feelings are more often the melancholy ones linked to sadness, abandonment, loss; loss not only of love but also of friendship, abandonment not only of the loved one but also of the country of origin, of the traditions, of the house, or all at once as in the sad Adios muchachos.
Women
Although female tango singers existed, they have adapted to sing tangos with human lyrics. Women, in the texts, are a cross of man’s delight, often they speak ill of it, calling them treacherous dreadful, but basically without them the world can not go on and this man understands it. In Malena Homero Manzi sings a woman, also a tango singer, describing her with aching melancholy. Woman also means mum, but the mother unlike the lover does not betray, does not abandon, even manages to comfort his son in the worst moments of his life. It is the only true, honest, pure and worthy woman that can be in the heart of the tanguero man.
La Cumparsita
Among the most known tangos in the world we find La Cumparsita, which already gives its name to the mixture of races of cultures that are part of the tango. “Cumparsita” is not a Spanish term but more probably is taken from the Sicilian dialect, where cumparsa is used instead of an appearance.
In the tango carnival there is this, “appearance” (here we use the diminutive) which is a typical figure. Gerardo Matos Rodriguez, in 1915, took his inspiration from this figure to compose a catchy little tag for the year-end party of the “Arquitectura” faculty, which like all the other faculties had a song at the end of the year. The following year the students entrusted Roberto Firpo with the task of giving the maretta a tango dress. Thus, in 1916, one of the most beloved traditional songs was born.
Also evident in this song is the consoling role of the mother, the only character with positive connotations present in this strongly pessimistic text.
Love
How not to talk about love? Love is not always happy, but no less worth living. Intense love and full of poetry as in the sad Naranjo en flor.
